Early Head StartEarly Head Start is a federal program serving infants, toddlers, pregnant women and their families who have incomes below the federal poverty level. Early Head Start promotes the school readiness of children ages birth to three by enhancing their cognitive, social, and emotional development.
We provide comprehensive services to enrolled children and their families, which include health, nutrition, social, and other services determined to be necessary by family needs assessments, in addition to education and cognitive development services. Our services are designed to be responsive to each child and family's ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage, and we emphasize the role of parents as their child's first and most important teacher. We offer a variety of service models, which include a center-based daycare setting that children attend for part-day or full-day services, a family child care home setting, and home-based services that take place in the family’s home. In the home-based program option, there are 5 parent educators who visit the home once a week to provide services to the child and family. Children and families who receive home-based services gather twice per month with other enrolled families for a group learning experience facilitated by Early Head Start staff. Currently, we have 24 children enrolled in our center-based program, 4 children enrolled in our family child care program, and 50 pregnant women and children enrolled in our home-based program. Enrollment is completed on an ongoing basis throughout the calendar year. Many children who turn 3 years old enter one of our Guadalupe Head Start centers for their preschool experience. Due to this transition, we often have openings in September when the new program year begins. |
