Centro Hispano High School
Youth Education One hundred (100) at risk youth are served by the Centro Hispano High School in grades 9 through 12. Parents of these students are also beneficiaries of other educational and social services offered by the Council. This high school is a public entity providing at risk youth the opportunity to obtain a high school diploma and to prepare for college. Centro Hispano H.S. is under contract with the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). It was selected by the National Council of La Raza to receive funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to convert to a model known as early college high school. The school has a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) that will allow students to take courses for college credit starting in the 11th grade. To better support students and their families, Centro Hispano H.S. partners with UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University, Alverno College, the Urban Ecology Center, and several community-based organizations. Who is eligible? Students in grades 9 -12 who live in the city of Milwaukee and who meet the state of Wisconsin at risk criteria. PEW Report on Young Latinos, see report The Centro Hispano Living Laboratory is up and running. Science classes were held in the greenhouse where students learned about, designed and built the raised bed gardens. They planted everything from seed, and their studies revolved around the science and biology of plants and gardens. They were able to build a bat, butterfly and birdhouse, a vermiculture center, and rain garden. In addition, students learned about, designed and built a complete aquaponics center in collaboration with SUPAR High School and Nancy Frank a professor at the University of Wisconsin of Architecture. |
